02 / FIRST GAME? NO PROBLEM.
New to the game? Learn these basics before you step on court. You’ll be rallying in no time.
Serve diagonally into the opposite service court. In a traditional volley serve, contact the ball below waist level with an upward swing. The serve must land beyond the kitchen line.
START BEHIND THE BASELINEAfter the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once. The serving team must then let the return bounce once, too. After those two bounces, volleys are allowed.
SERVE → BOUNCE → RETURN → BOUNCEThe kitchen is the 7-foot non-volley zone on each side of the net. You can enter it, but you cannot volley the ball while standing in it or touching its line.
LET IT BOUNCE IN THE KITCHENGames are commonly played to 11 points and you usually need to win by 2. Under traditional side-out scoring, only the serving team can score. Call the score before serving.
PLAY TO 11 · WIN BY 2A fault stops the rally. Common examples include hitting out, failing to clear the net, volleying before the two bounces, or volleying while in the kitchen.
